week 10

       His name is “Oddball”.
He is a white dog who lives in Australia. He was always getting in trouble. The neighbors complained. They actually wanted him killed. Then, Oddball’s owner, Peter, learned of a really sad problem and decided to make Oddball the answer to the problem.
On a nearby by island there used to be what are called Fairy Penguins. Fairy Penguins are only 12 inches/30 cm tall and are very friendly. But suddenly foxes discovered them. When the ocean is at “low tide” you can walk to the island on the beach. That’s what the foxes did. They killed almost all the penguins. There used to be 800 penguins but the people could only find 4.  People were really sad, but no one knew what to do ... except Peter.
Instead of killing Oddball, Peter decided to see if Oddball would protect the Fairy Penguins. (Dog’s can be trained to protect sheep and chickens.)

You guessed it! Thanks to Oddball the foxes could not kill any more penguins. Slowly the penguin families grew. There are now more than 200 on the island. Oddball doesn’t work alone any more. There are new dogs that help him now. People now say that Oddball is a hero.
The story was made into a movie this year.

  1. After reading the story, I think that everyone is good at something, and you just need to discover it. Peter is really smart guy, and he finds an alternative way to help his dog instead of killing him.

  3. I am part of a group of people who volunteer to drive people who cannot drive. I take them to doctor's appointments and other necessary places. Most of the people are really grateful and thank me. But some others seem to feel that they deserve to be taken care of. I have learned that I am doing this because it is the good thing to do, not necessarily because people will like me for doing it. And.. sometimes doing something hard is more rewarding than doing the easy thing.

  4. FROM KEITH—
For my project I want to help students at my school who are on sports teams and don't have much time for homework. What I can do is help them with their Chemistry homework and make sure that they actually have learned something from the class. One idea could be group work, we could work as a group and help each other out. I think it is a good way to save time and have a good effect. I will begin this in my chemistry class and help my classmates to solve any problems they have. I would do my best!

  6. For my Project: I will be helping to teach English via Skype at an orphanage in Turkey. Mrs. Jeannie is going to help me learn how to do this. I am eager to start this work because I love children and I love the way they learn. I have been heartbroken as I stay informed about the Syrian refugee crisis. I have never met anyone from Syria and I am looking forward to making new young friends. I hope to teach English in a fun and lighthearted way. I think we learn best whenever we are having fun, it helps us to remember what we are learning. That is why I love to teach children, they bring out the best in all of us.
I love reading about everyone's projects. This world is a better place because of the gifts all of you bring to it. As we head into 2016 I pray for all of you to be healthy, to love life and to keep learning. You have so much to give to the world.
